Updated January 1, 2012
Moon Days in January are on Mondays this month, Jan 9th & Jan 23rd. No Mysore in the AM these days.
is traditionally taught in a Mysore Style class where the practitioner commits the sequence to memory and practices at his/her own pace. The teacher guides the sequence to the student assisting with hands-on adjustments and verbal instructions to deepen the practitioner's understanding of the practice, breath and focus or drishti. At Asana House you can find Mysore Style, Led Beginner (Guided Classes) and Full Primary Led Classes as well as private instruction in the series. Below are the details for the times and pricing. Ashtanga Yoga is meant to be a 6 day a week practice with days off on the New and Full Moon. A dedication to the practice, trust in the system and a willingness are the key elements to starting this life long practice.
Mysore style is a self paced practice following Ashtanga Yoga sequencing. Mysore practice is the name given to the style of yoga teaching developed by guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois at his yoga shala in Mysore, southern India. Students of all levels from beginners to advanced practice side by side. This is one of the best ways to practice learning the sequence with hands-on adjustments from the teacher. Students are given one-on-one instruction from the teacher as they progress through a set sequence of postures, starting with the Primary Series and moving gradually into the more advanced Series.
| "Practice and all is coming." - Sri K. Pattabhi Jois |
Monday thru Friday Mornings (Moon Days observed for Mysore classes only)
5:30 am to 9:00 am
Teacher: Chuck Secallus, Deb Williams
If you are new yoga and are interested in developing a life long practice try Mysore. Beginners are welcome to come to the mat to start to develop a yoga practice. There is no experience required just a desire to learn and a willingness to practice. With this self paced system of learning the Ashtanga Series you work at your pace with your teacher and work this process together. See above for times studio is open for practice. It is recommended to attend studio classes at least two times a week in the beginning. Your practice from start to finish will usually take 1 to 1 1/2 hours. See Mysore Schedule for times.
This class is a great place to start to understand the sequence of asana (poses) that make up the primary series. Led Ashtanga classes are with a teacher leading the class and instructing students in the order of the poses, usually in the primary. We will work at the level of the group and move at the group pace. we will learn how to flow in the sequence and explore the importnat elements for practice. Attending two to three classes is helpful to get familiar with the practice and once sequence of poses is committed to memory it can be an ideal foundation for growing in your yoga practice.

Led by: Hillary Leonarrd
Monday Evening: 7 pm to 8:30 pm
The teacher guides the class though the primary sequence. The primary sequence is called Yoga Chikitsa meaning Yoga therapy. The teacher will count out the breaths and the asana or poses in the traditional order. In the Full Primary sequence the class will move through sun salutations, standing poses, seated forward bends, twists, back bends, inversions and concludes with a breath based meditation and the closing chant.
Led by: Deb Williams
Saturday Morning: 8 am to 9:45 am
(Basic elements covered in Beginning Ashtanga)
Ashtanga is a form of yoga that focuses on the breath to move you from pose to pose while breathing freely within each asana. Students will learn the sequence of poses that comprise the Ashtanga system and also explore the basic principles of this ancient tradition through handouts and video clips. The benefits of Ashtanga yoga include: building strength, increasing flexibility and muscle tone, and reducing stress. All levels are welcome. This class is great for anyone new to Ashtanga whether you have stepped on the mat before or not. Class is open to all level practitioners.
Session I: From the first inhale to the last exhale: Find out what gives life to the practice, our breath! When applied to the series, "ujjayi" breath is our bodies fuel, creating internal heat and keeping us safe from injury!
Session II: The Standing Sequence: Dissect the standing asanas by focusing on the principals of twisting, binding and wrapping. Paying special attention to the importance of oppositional forces, alignment, and balance.
Session III: Explore the elusive and mysterious components to the "jump-through" and "jump-back". The Vinyasa works in conjunction with the breath to balance out the body between postures. We will make controlled transitions from asana to asana attainable for everyone.
Session IV: Back bends keep the spine healthy and flexible. Explore the idea that this asana is as much a forward lengthener as it is a backward bend.
Session V: Ashtanga Yoga is . . . In fact the physical practice of asanas is the third limb out of eight. Recap everything we have learned with plenty of time for open discussion.
